Mahasweta Buragohain (Sweta)

Mahasweta Buragohain (Sweta)

Mahasweta (Sweta) is a registered counsellor and member of the Australian Counselling Association (ACA). She holds a Master of Counselling, a Master of Science in Psychological Counselling, and a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. With more than fifteen years of experience across India, the UAE, and Australia in education and related fields, Mahasweta brings a well-informed understanding of child development and family systems to her clinical work.

Mahasweta’s therapeutic approach is guided by the core principles of person-centred therapy. She anchors her practice in genuineness, non-judgement and empathy, believing that meaningful growth is supported by a strong and trusting therapeutic relationship. She also draws on a strengths-based approach, working collaboratively with clients to build upon their existing capacities and support meaningful change. In addition, her practice is informed by attachment theory and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, particularly in supporting the development of emotional awareness and regulation.

Mahasweta understands a young person’s development as being shaped by interacting systems, including family, school, community and the broader cultural context. This systemic perspective guides her work with young people and, where appropriate, their families and schools. Having lived and worked across India, the UAE and Australia, Mahasweta is attuned to the ways culture and language can shape how young people and their families understand emotions, relationships and support needs.
